As an Existing Product Design Engineer at Smirthwaite – Prism Healthcare’s Paediatric division, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the continuous improvement and optimization of our existing paediatric product portfolio. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you will be responsible for driving design enhancements, performance improvements, and maintaining product integrity throughout its lifecycle.
You will need to be comfortable liaising with all other departments within the business especially our sales, purchasing, quality and manufacturing teams. You will also be required to provide updates on projects both weekly and monthly to various teams.
Essential duties will include, but not limited to the following:
- Product Analysis and Evaluation: Conducting comprehensive assessments of existing products to identify areas for improvement, usability enhancements, and potential design refinements.
- Design Enhancements: Collaborating with the R&D and Design teams to propose and implement product modifications that enhance performance, safety, and user experience. Product development to meet BS EN 10535 as a minimum, but also various ISO 60601 standards.
- Drawing Creation: Produce drawings and specifications to enable manufacture of the product.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring that design changes comply with relevant medical device regulations, standards, and certifications.
- Product Testing and Validation: Working closely with the Testing and Quality Assurance teams to plan and execute testing and validation procedures to ensure that design changes meet or exceed performance and safety standards.
- Risk Analysis: Identifying potential risks associated with design modifications and proposing appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation of design changes, test results, and relevant data. Providing periodic reports on progress, challenges, and successes to the management team.
- Collaboration and Communication: Effectively communicating with cross-functional teams, including R&D, Manufacturing, Regulatory Affairs, and Marketing, to ensure seamless integration of design updates and improvements. Support the factory with all technical queries.
- Value Engineering: Collaborating with the Procurement and Supply Chain teams to identify and implement cost-effective solutions without compromising product quality.
- Continuous Improvement: Actively participating in design review meetings, sharing ideas for process improvements, and contributing to the enhancement of design engineering methodologies within the organization.
- Production Support: Support when required to solve production issues and provide instructions on Product changes.

Education & Experience
- Education: HNC minimum (degree preferred) in Engineering, Product Design, or a related field.
- Experience: 3 years of experience in product design engineering. Product development management experience is an advantage.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and other relevant engineering tools. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications: PowerPoint, Word and particularly Excel. Familiarity with risk analysis techniques, medical device regulations, and standards is a plus.
